this is the CLOSEST THING I HAVE EVER GOTTEN TO ANON HATE IT’S PRACTICALLY AN ATTACK ON MY ENTIRE IDENTITY. (i am kidding. like 70% kidding.)
the point of aiber in the series or the point of aiber in my heart? bc in the series he’s literally just a plot necessity to deal with yotsuba stuff and so is wedy, and maybe ohba and obata were trying to do like a swanky noir thing with them but it never went anywhere really
but TO ME aiber is? kind of like a cheesy self-insert really? like, he’s got barely any canon personality besides ‘western and possibly suave? blond hair? a suit?’ and so sure i could let him be bc what fun is a blank slate? but something in my wacky brain just sort of clicked with his wacky design and i go to love the ideas of possible characterizations of him that quickly became real characterizations (in how i write and headcanon him - which is not to far from how most people do i think bc he’s a very cliche sleazy conman archetype)
i can’t speak for other people, however, only myself, when it comes to my more in-depth readings/projections of and onto him. like, i think the conman thing really lends itself to identity issues and that fact that he’s over the top suggests a sort of self-deprecation that i’m very familiar with. like, the idea of making yourself into a joke - something to laugh with or at, and wonder at the ridiculousness of - because you don’t think that you could be liked for what you really are, and finding comfort in the performance. having this shiny gold crowd-pleasing smile to cover whatever’s fucked to hell underneath
that, at least to me, is the point of aiber
