Wow this is a big subject and I’m sure someone could write a better and more concise reply but thanks for the ask. I’ll try my best to answer in a way that makes some kind of sense and that isn’t really lame.

I 99% agree with you, anon, but somehow the anime is worse for me because it misses out a lot of subtleties of the manga. I can’t deny the problem or excuse it or defend it, I can only try to defend myself for liking it despite that, because it’s the major gripe I have with it as well. There are some interpretations I’ve come to which I’m not saying are right and they’re not excuses for the faults of DN, but in a way it doesn’t matter because if something helps you think about and strengthen your convictions on important RL topics like sexism then that’s a good thing. I think if you like DN it’s pretty essential that you recognise this weakness in it and it should be discussed more. It’s a shame that it alienates girls reading it who find no positive representation there because there’s still a lot to like about it if you like a big pit of depressing. 

This will be probably be a wall of text because DNs portrayal of women is something I’ve had problems with since I first read it.
